The End of the London Astoria
The last ever gig at the London Astoria was last night held as Mystery Jets, The Automatic, VV Brown, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, and Frank Turner all took to the stage in order to say goodbye to the iconic London venue.
The London Astoria had been utilised as a music venue since 1976, but closed its doors today, and it’s thought that the building will be demolished this coming weekend. The building is being demolished due to the Crossrail project, a project to build new railway connections under central London.
Astoria 2 (LA2) is also being demolished, and the last concert there was held this evening.
Throughout the years, many high profile artists have performed at the London Astoria such as Oasis, Blur, Nirvana, David Bowie, and even Jimi Hendrix. Other notable artists to have performed at the venue include Eminem and Amy Winehouse; the venue has a lot of history, and to see one of London’s greatest music venues disappear truly is a travesty.
The closing of London Astoria is a huge loss to the London music scene, and although many music venues still remain across London; the London Astoria was always a very special one, and one that will most certainly be sorely missed by many.
A replacement venue will be built at some point in the future by Festival Republic, nothing will ever change the fact that the Astoria has closed its doors however, and the building itself will soon be no more.
Festival Republic has lost its last remaining music venues, and never again will anymore live music be enjoyed at either 157 or 165 Charing Cross Road.
