Joe Satriani Sues Coldplay

Published by richleigh at 11:21 pm under Rock Music Edit This

Seeking “any and all profits”, Joe Satriani has sued Coldplay for alleged plagiarism of one of his songs. The Satriani track in question here is the instrumental ‘If I Could Fly’ from his ‘Is There Love in Space?’ album, and the accused Coldplay track is that of ‘Viva La Vida’.

‘Viva La Vida’ has been a hugely commercially successful single all around the world and there’s therefore a lot riding on this case. Satriani stands to make a lot of money if this copyright infringement case is successful, and claims that ‘Viva La Vida’ contains “substantial original portions” of his own ‘If I Could Fly’.

‘Viva La Vida’ is nominated for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the Grammy Awards 2009. In total Coldplay has been nominated for a sensational seven Grammy Awards.
